Chances are if you’re reading this blog post the title caught your attention. Perhaps you are in the middle of your own struggle with PCOS or know someone who is. PCOS is the most common endocrine disorder in females, affecting 5-10% of women. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a hormonal imbalance that causes anovulatory cycles, irregular periods, and ovarian cysts. Most women who have PCOS have difficulty conceiving and suffer from a long list of painful side effects.

I’m going to focus this post on candida because I believe it is the main culprit and there are many practical steps you can start taking today to beat candida and ultimately, PCOS.
What is candida?
Candida is a form of yeast that lives in your gut, mouth and genitals. When it is in balance with the healthy gut bacteria all is well but when there is an overgrowth the candida start to produce toxins that are hard on the body. Many experience headaches, fatigue, digestive issues, acne,vaginal thrush and sugar cravings. Candida overgrowth can be caused by antibiotics because it destroys the balance of good and bad gut bacteria as well as birth control since candida thrive off of progesterone, or just a poor diet heavy in sugar and processed foods. Any overgrowth can cause a hormonal imbalance (because 70% of hormones live in your gut). Candida love to eat sugar and processed simple carbs which is why most women with PCOS report experiencing strong sugar cravings.
So how does candida cause PCOS and what can you do about it today?
As candida eat progesterone it creates a severe hormone imbalance which causes the disruption in the menstrual cycle, the dominance of androgens (male hormones) and side effects such as facial hair, acne, weight gain in the mid section etc. Many western doctors when faced with a case of PCOS will prescribe birth control or androgen blockers. While this may alleviate the symptoms the underlying problem is still there, lingering and left untreated.
The number one thing you can do to treat PCOS is to make lifestyle changes. Exercise more, stress less, get adequate sleep, drink enough water and start cutting out processed foods and added sugar (including honey, agave, sugar in the raw). Studies show than women with polycystic ovarian syndrome thrive on a low glycemic diet.

Replace your morning bagel or pastry with a smoothie
Take an afternoon walk
Find joy in cooking at home
Make a weekly grocery list and meal plan
Keep fruit in your purse for when you’re really experiencing a sugar craving
Oil pull daily (kills oral bacteria which scream for sugar!)
Go gluten free. Since candida is a yeast, eating gluten will just contribute to more yeast in the gut thus perpetuating the problem
Make getting adequate sleep a priority
Overnight change won’t happen but as you continue making gradual changes and making your health and recovery a priority progress will come and it will be worth all the hard work.
